Maude Connolly

Maude has been painting for many years and is a renowned painter in her community. Inspired by traditional Innu legends and tales, her paintings are both unique and naive and are a tribute to Ilnu spirituality and culture. It is with her artistic and creative family members that Maude mastered her techniques of color use and form. Working full-time at the Native Museum of Mashteuiatsh, Maude is dedicated to adding to her cultural heritage and using her art to benefit her community.

Description

(2004) Wood, acrylic.
Maude can see the souls hidden in the shadows of the world around her. This extraordinary ability incites her to express herself through her creations in a colourful and skillful manner. During our drawing workshops, she first worked on a series of masks representing wild animals. With her brush, she then depicted and tattooed the revelations made by the driftwood calling to her to come to their rescue. Watching Maude work is like watching a fantastic story unfold, a real and imaginary tale related by her inner voice and expressive gestures.
